In photovoltaics, an increasingly popular technology of decentralized power supply, sunlight is converted in the solar cells directly into electrical energy. The physical basis for this is the photovoltaic effect: sunlight can cause the temporarily release of electrons from the atomic union in semiconductors (e.g. silicon), thus producing current conduction.

In order to efficiently generate electricity, photovoltaic modules are mounted southward at a horizontal angle of about 30°. Since solar cells can produce only direct current, the energy obtained must be converted into alternating current through an inverter. Only then can the energy be fed into the public network.
